Radiant Ball/Radiant Disc/Beautiful Glow - Science Museum Exhibits Solution
Display purpose
The phenomenon of glow often occurs in nature, and the principle of glow has been applied in modern technology (such as neon lights, voltage regulators, etc.). This exhibition items introduce the phenomenon and basic principles of glow discharge to the audience through demonstrations of glow balls and glow discs.
Science Behind It
Luminous sphere is also known as ion magic sphere. Its appearance is a high-strength glass sphere shell filled with a thin inert gas (such as argon), and there is a black spherical electrode at the center of the glass sphere. There is an oscillating circuit board at the bottom of the ball, and power is converted into high voltage and high frequency voltage on the electrodes through a power converter. Its internal voltage is very high, and glass at room temperature is a good insulator, so there is no danger of coming into contact with glass. When a glowing ball is working, an electric field similar to a point charge is formed around the electrode at the center of the ball. When you touch a ball (connected to the Earth) with your hand, the electric field and potential distribution around the ball are no longer uniform and symmetrical, so the glow around your fingers will become brighter, and the generated arc will move with the movement of your fingers, twisting and dancing as they move.
Description
Exhibition items mainly consist of a table body, glow balls, glow discs, etc. The center of the disc is equipped with high-frequency and high-voltage electrodes, and the disc is filled with low-pressure inert gas. After the high-voltage electrode is energized, due to the strong electric field and the thin inert gas, it is ionized and excited to produce a beautiful glow. Helium in inert gases emits blue light, argon emits light purple light, and neon emits orange red light. When the hand is placed on the glow disc, a discharge channel is formed between the hand and the electrode, and the glow in this area becomes even brighter. As the finger moves on the glow disc, the discharge channel moves accordingly.
