Binaural Effect Listening, Positioning, and Direction Recognition - Design, Planning, Concept, and Deepening Plan for Science Museum Exhibitions and Exhibits

What It Shows

This exhibition item sets 5 sound sources evenly distributed in different positions, and visitors stand at designated positions to listen and determine the location of the sound sources, experiencing the binaural effect.

Science Behind It

The binaural effect is the effect in which people rely on the volume difference, time difference, and chromatic aberration between their ears to determine the direction of sound. When the sound intensity is different, the distance between the sound source and the listener can be felt.

When the sound source (including complex cluster signals) is biased towards the left or right ear, that is, deviates from the central axis in front of both ears, there is a difference in the distance from the sound source to the left and right ears, which will result in differences in sound level, time, and phase when the sound reaches the two ears. This small difference is perceived by the human auditory system, transmitted to the brain, and compared and analyzed with existing auditory experiences stored in the brain to determine the direction of sound, which is known as the binaural effect.

Description

The exhibition items mainly consist of two parts: wall speakers and interactive panels.

When the audience participates, press the start button of the exhibitions, and the speakers on the exhibition wall will sound from left to right, then enter the testing mode. Please select the corresponding number on the booth based on the position of the speaker, and the system will make the correct judgment.

How to Operate

Stand at the designated location, press the "Listen" button, listen carefully, and determine the location of the sound source;

Press the corresponding sound source number button, and the indicator light below the sound source will determine if the selection is correct.
