Exhibition Name
Which one rolls faster
Science Behind It
The exhibition items consist of two identical transparent tracks, two test wheels with the same external mass distribution (one mainly in the center and one at the edge), and an activation and release mechanism. The two rollers have the same mass and size, but the position of the metal blocks on the rollers is different, so their mass distribution is not the same. According to the principle of moment of inertia, the mass distribution of two wheels is different, and their moment of inertia is also different. When the mass distribution of a rotating object is closer to the center of the axis, it is easier to rotate around the axis and the speed is faster. On the contrary, the rotation speed slows down. In daily life, we can see that when figure skaters perform spin movements on the ice, they adjust the mass distribution by holding and relaxing their arms, thereby controlling their rotational speed.
