Automobile differential
Science Behind It
The differential is a device that transmits the power of the engine to the two wheels and allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds when the vehicle is cornered. From the schematic diagram, it can be seen that the differential is mainly composed of side gears, planetary gears, sun gears, and other components. The side bevel gear of the differential can receive power from the input shaft and rotate, while driving the planetary gears in circular motion through the sun gear. When a car is driving in a straight line, the planetary gear will drive two output shafts to rotate at the same speed, and the planetary gear will not rotate on its own. When a car turns, due to the different turning radii on the inner and outer sides, the rotational speed of the outer wheels is greater than that of the inner wheels. The planetary gears rotate under the different forces of the two sun gears, compensating for the speed difference between the two wheels and ensuring smooth cornering of the vehicle.
