Science Behind It
The distance between two metal rods is narrow at the bottom and wide at the top, and they are respectively connected to the two poles of the high-voltage generator, but they are not connected. Pressing the button generates high voltage between two metal rods. Although air is an insulator under normal circumstances, if the distance is close enough and the voltage is high enough, this line of defense can still be broken through. Therefore, at the closest point between the two metal rods, the air is broken through, forming a bright arc. The temperature in the arc is very high, and the air is rapidly heated, causing the arc to rise along with the hot air. During the rising process of the arc, as the arc is elongated, the high-voltage electricity cannot continue to penetrate the air and the arc is extinguished. But the high voltage inside the metal rod continues, so the high voltage breaks through the air again, creating a new arc and continuing to move upwards. In daily life, we can see electric arcs formed by high-voltage breakdown of air, such as lightning during thunderstorm seasons.
