Exhibition Name
Hand battery
Science Behind It
The basic composition of a battery requires positive and negative electrodes and electrolyte. In this exhibition, different metal rods serve as positive and negative electrodes, while sweat on the hand acts as an electrolyte, forming a simple battery. The chemical reactivity of positive and negative electrodes is different, with the negative electrode being more reactive than the positive electrode. They react chemically with sweat to generate electricity. Therefore, when holding different metal rods with both hands, the ammeter pointer deflects and is directed towards the positive electrode of the handheld battery.
The three types of metal bars on the booth are steel bars, copper bars, and aluminum bars. Can you determine which of these three metals has the most reactive chemical properties and which one is second? You can try making a potato battery or fruit battery with this metal sheet by hand.
