Exhibition Name
Acoustic standing wave
Science Behind It
After the sound source emits sound waves, the sound waves will reflect at the other end inside the tube. When the reflected wave returns along the original path, it will meet the incident wave. At this time, these two columns of sound waves with the same amplitude, frequency, and vibration direction but opposite propagation direction will superimpose on each other. The superposition effect causes some places to have the maximum amplitude, which is called antinodes; Some places have the smallest amplitude, called nodes, where the antinodes and nodes remain stationary. Therefore, we call the waves formed by this superposition standing waves. But when the frequency of the sound wave changes, the position of the antinodes and nodes will change, and the density of the convex and concave points of the particles will be different, as if they are "dancing". Various instruments used in daily life, such as strings, wind instruments, and percussion instruments, all utilize the principle of standing waves.
