1. Content

Display items: Set up a circular catenary track, place the square wheel car on the undulating track, and connect the square wheel car to the center of the track through a circular rod. The audience can ride the square wheel bike forward or backward. The audience will find that although the road is uneven and the wheels are not round, the axle moves smoothly on a constant height route.

The wheels of the transportation vehicles we see in daily life are all circular, so that the vehicle can move smoothly on the ground. Now the wheels of our car are square, but it can also travel smoothly because the track on which the car travels is a carefully designed catenary, and the distance between the center of the wheel and the ground remains constant during the journey, thus achieving a smooth driving effect. This exhibition uses the method of reverse thinking to visually represent specific mathematical curves.

2. Principle

A catenary is a type of curve, named after its similarity in shape to a rope hanging at both ends that falls under uniform gravity. After selecting the appropriate coordinate system, the equation of the catenary is a hyperbolic cosine function.

The application of catenary in our daily life is also very extensive. For example, suspension bridges, hyperbolic arch bridges, overhead cables, and hyperbolic arch dams.

3. Purpose

Exhibition items allow the audience to experience the magic of square wheeled vehicles firsthand, enabling them to understand the scientific principles of the catenary and its practical value in daily life.
