1. Content:

The exhibition items are mainly composed of violins and drums. The main body of the exhibition items is an inverted violin, with a freely rotating drum installed behind the violin strings. The drum is covered with black and white stripes. Due to the principle of visual persistence, when participants rotate the drum and pluck the strings, a pattern of high and low sound waves can be observed on the surface of the drum when carefully observing. This is because the human eye has a phenomenon of "visual persistence" when looking at objects, so the vibrating strings cause a continuous waveform persistence phenomenon due to delay, making people mistakenly think they have seen "sound waves". The waveform formed by plucking the strings varies depending on the force applied. Compare the differences in waveform of different strings under different intensities.

2. Principle:

sound wave

The propagation of the vibration of a sound source in air or other substances is called sound waves. The characteristic of transverse waves is that the vibration direction is perpendicular to the propagation direction, while the characteristic of longitudinal waves is that the vibration direction is parallel to the propagation direction.

The fluctuation of the strings is a transverse wave, while the sound wave is a longitudinal wave. But the various characteristics of longitudinal waves and transverse waves are consistent, all described by parameters such as wavelength, frequency, and phase.

transverse wave

Transverse waves are also known as "concave convex waves". The direction of particle vibration is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation, and such waves are called "transverse waves".

longitudinal wave

Longitudinal waves are waves in which the vibration direction of a particle is parallel to its propagation direction.

3. Purpose:

Sound waves are the propagation form of sound. Sound waves are a type of mechanical wave generated by the vibration of objects. When propagating in gas and liquid media, they are longitudinal waves, but when propagating in solid media, they may be mixed with transverse waves. In daily life, we can see light and hear sound, but we cannot see sound waves. Exhibition items allow participants to clearly see sound waves through a fun and vivid interactive experiment.
