Magdeburg Hemisphere - Science Museum Exhibits Program

What It Shows

Exhibition items use mechanical interaction to learn about the Marburg Hemisphere Experiment and experience atmospheric pressure. The exhibition items consist of a Magdeburg hemisphere model, an exhaust system, display racks, and more. source factory of science museum exhibits - Shanghai Inertia Automation Co., Ltd. When prompted to participate, close the hemispherical dome to the top, press the "start" button, and the vacuum pump will create a vacuum inside the sphere. Then, grip the handle tightly and pull it downwards to try to separate the sphere. After a period of interaction, the two hemispheres automatically separate.

Science Behind It

The Magdeburg Hemisphere, also known as the Magdeburg Hemisphere, was a scientific experiment conducted in 1654 by Otto von Greick, the mayor of Magdeburg, in Regensburg, Holy Roman Empire (now Regensburg, Germany) to prove the existence of atmospheric pressure. And this experiment is also known as the "Magdeburg Hemisphere" experiment due to Grick's job title. The two hemispheres where the experiment was conducted are still preserved in the German Museum in Munich. source factory of science museum exhibits - Shanghai Inertia Automation Co., Ltd. There are also imitations for teaching purposes in reality, used to demonstrate the principle of air pressure. Their volume is much smaller than that of the hemisphere in the past. Vacuuming the space of the hemisphere does not require more than ten horses, and some can be pulled apart by only four people.

The Marburg Hemisphere experiment proves that atmospheric pressure exists and is very strong. In the experiment, the air in both hemispheres was extracted to reduce the number of air particles inside the spheres. The atmosphere outside the sphere tightly compresses the two hemispheres together, making it difficult to separate. The more air is extracted, the greater the pressure on the two hemispheres, and the less likely they are to separate.

How to Take Part

1. Close the hemispherical dome to the top, press the "start" button, and the air pump will exhaust the air inside the sphere;

2. Hold the handle and pull down hard to see if the hemisphere can be pulled apart.
