The China Science Museum is located in Chaoyang District, Beijing, and is a national level comprehensive science popularization landmark venue in China. Building A was built in the early days, and the new building that is mainly used now was officially opened to the public in 2009. It has undergone multiple partial updates and renovations since then; Complete the overall upgrade and renovation project of Children's Science Playground in 2021, fully update the electromechanical interactive exhibits in the children's exhibition area, and reconstruct the interactive logic of the exhibition area; Complete the iterative update of the "Challenge and Future" exhibition area in 2023, and replace the exhibition items of the cutting-edge technology sector on a large scale; Complete the update of some exhibitions in the Basic Science Exhibition Hall by 2025 and upgrade multiple sets of outdated exhibition control systems. The total construction area of the venue is 102000 square meters, with a permanent exhibition hall area of 40000 square meters. It is equipped with a ball screen cinema, a giant screen cinema, a 4D cinema, a dynamic cinema, a large multifunctional lecture hall, multiple maker laboratories, and a science popularization theater. The venue implements a free online real name reservation system for visits, open to the whole society from Wednesday to Sunday, and closed on Monday and Tuesday for large-scale equipment inspections, system maintenance, and exhibition inspections. As a national level science popularization leader, China Science Museum carries out science popularization demonstrations, exhibition tours, standard setting, and talent training nationwide. Every year, it receives a large number of visitors and research groups from various provinces and cities across the country.
The venue has five main exhibition halls and a children's science playground themed exhibition hall, namely the Science Park Exhibition Hall, Exploration and Discovery Exhibition Hall, Technology and Life Exhibition Hall, Challenge and Future Exhibition Hall, and Huaxia Light Exhibition Hall. The Exploration and Discovery Exhibition Hall is a basic science theme, with a top scale interactive exhibition cluster of mechanics, acoustics, optics, and electromagnetics in China. It systematically displays the basic scientific laws of the material world, and a large number of classic electromechanical science popularization exhibition items have become important reference models for the design of science museum exhibitions across the country. The Technology and Life Exhibition Hall showcases the changes that technology has brought to clothing, food, housing, transportation, healthcare, and manufacturing, covering various science and technology related to people's livelihoods. The Challenge and Future Exhibition Hall focuses on cutting-edge technology fields such as aerospace, energy, artificial intelligence, and new materials, with a large number of large-scale immersive electromechanical interactive experience devices showcasing the future direction of human technological development. The Huaxia Light Exhibition Hall is a highly representative characteristic exhibition hall of our museum, which systematically restores and displays the technological achievements of ancient Chinese astronomy, water conservancy, metallurgy, architecture, navigation, and handicrafts. It interprets and spreads traditional Chinese scientific and technological civilization through interactive exhibition items. The Science Park exhibition hall is specifically designed for children aged 3-8, divided into multiple experience zones according to cognitive rules. All exhibit items are implemented with high standards of safety protection, completing scientific enlightenment at a young age through gamification. The venue is equipped with four different types of special effects cinemas, providing various forms of immersive science popularization movies; Regularly staging large-scale scientific experimental dramas in science popularization theaters; Multiple maker laboratories offer advanced science and technology innovation practical courses for young people.
The Chinese Science Museum undertakes the leading function of national science popularization, and its research and development curriculum system covers all age groups, accepting visits from a large number of research and learning groups from all over the country. The venue hosts national science popularization lectures, large-scale science carnivals, and national youth science and technology innovation competitions year-round; Multiple advanced technology study camps will be held during winter and summer vacations. The venue has developed a large number of science popularization exhibition kits, which have been transported to science museums and local campuses in various provinces and cities across the country for exhibition. Carrying out high-level business training for the national science popularization industry, exporting national level industry experience in exhibition planning, exhibition research and development, operation and maintenance management, science popularization activity planning, and course development, playing a strong demonstration and driving role in the development of the domestic science popularization venue industry.
The number and scale of exhibitions in the venue are huge, with a large number of visitors received annually. Exhibitions operate frequently for a long time, and the pressure of equipment wear and tear is among the top tier of domestic venues. The venue has established a large-scale specialized operation and maintenance technical team, including mechanical, automation, electronic, and software technical engineers. A full lifecycle management file is established for each set of exhibits, and a complete operation and maintenance process is strictly implemented, including daily comprehensive inspections, monthly partial maintenance, quarterly deep maintenance of the entire venue, and annual large-scale shutdown maintenance. Various loss components such as motors, sensors, controllers, etc. are periodically inspected and replaced to continuously ensure the overall integrity of tens of thousands of exhibits. The Chinese Science Museum carries the mission of national science popularization education, inheriting Chinese scientific and technological civilization, disseminating modern scientific knowledge, and continuously driving the overall improvement of scientific literacy among the whole nation.
