The Shanxi Science Museum is located in Taiyuan City and is a provincial-level comprehensive science popularization venue in Shanxi Province. The new venue was officially completed and opened in 2018, with a total construction area of 30400 square meters and a permanent exhibition hall area of 15000 square meters. It is equipped with a ball screen cinema, 4D special effects cinema, science popularization lecture hall, and maker workshop. Complete the first round of exhibition items upgrade and renovation in 2021, updating the energy themed exhibition area; Renovate the children's science playground in 2024, upgrade the mechanical and electrical exhibition control system, and improve the accessibility facilities in the exhibition hall. The venue implements a free real name reservation system for visits, open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, and closed for maintenance on Monday and Tuesday. It is an important provincial-level science popularization education base in central North China.

The Universe and Life Exhibition Hall conducts science popularization around astronomy, the universe, and the evolution of life, and is equipped with multiple sets of space themed interactive experience devices; The Machine and Power Exhibition Hall gathers a large number of mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic interactive exhibitions, demonstrating scientific principles such as mechanical transmission and energy conversion; Moving towards the future exhibition hall, focusing on cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence and digital technology; The children's science playground is designed for children aged 3-10, divided into multiple exploration zones, and all exhibit items are implemented with rounded corners for safe handling; The energy themed exhibition hall is a highly distinctive exhibition area of the venue, closely integrated with the background of Shanxi's energy industry, and creating a series of interactive science popularization exhibition items around coal, new energy, and energy conservation and emission reduction; The Shanxi Science and Technology Exhibition Hall excavates the ancient scientific and technological achievements of the Three Jin Dynasties and modern industrial technology, combining local historical and cultural resources with modern science popularization. The dome theater plays astronomical science popularization films in a loop, providing an immersive viewing experience for the audience.
The Shanxi Science Museum undertakes the task of promoting science popularization throughout the province. The museum regularly holds science experiment shows, Shanxi Science Popularization Lectures, youth science and technology innovation competitions, science and technology carnivals, and science and technology research camps during winter and summer vacations. A large number of primary and secondary schools from various cities within the province have come here to carry out study and practice. The venue provides business training for science popularization workers in various cities and counties in Shanxi, outputs exhibition resources, and assists in the construction of grassroots science popularization sites. The science popularization caravan goes deep into mountainous and county-level campuses within the province, carrying portable interactive science exhibitions to alleviate the shortage of grassroots science popularization resources.
The large temperature difference between winter and summer in northern regions poses certain challenges to the stability of mechanical and electrical exhibition components. Establish a dedicated operation and maintenance team for the venue, establish a comprehensive exhibition inspection and maintenance system, conduct daily inspections of all interactive exhibitions, regularly repair and replace damaged components such as motors, sensors, and controllers, adapt to local climate conditions, and ensure stable operation of exhibitions. The Shanxi Science Museum is an important window for disseminating scientific ideas and enhancing the scientific literacy of the entire population in Shanxi Province, continuously promoting the development of the province's general education.
