The new Quanzhou Science Museum is located in the Quanzhou Public Cultural Center and is an important city level comprehensive science popularization venue in the southern Fujian region. The new museum was officially completed and opened to the public in 2022, with a total construction area of 30423 square meters and an exhibition and teaching area of 13000 square meters. It is equipped with a ball screen cinema, a 4D special effects cinema, a large lecture hall, and a maker innovation space. The old museum was already put into use in the early years, and after the completion of the new museum construction, it will undertake the city's science popularization functions. By 2025, it will complete the iterative upgrade of some exhibition items, update the mechanical and electrical equipment of the marine technology exhibition area, and optimize the visitor flow route of the exhibition hall. The venue implements a free real name reservation system for visits, open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, and closed for maintenance on Monday and Tuesday, radiating throughout Quanzhou and surrounding cities in southern Fujian.
The venue has six themed exhibition halls: Ocean Exploration, Technology Traceability, Mathematical Exploration, Life Decoding, Future Vision, and Children's Science Playground. The Ocean Exploration Exhibition Hall fits the historical positioning of Quanzhou as a coastal port city, and creates a series of interactive science popularization exhibition items around marine ecology, maritime history, and port engineering. It is the most recognizable characteristic exhibition area of the venue; The technology traceability section delves into the history of the Quanzhou Maritime Silk Road, transforming the traditional technology contained in ancient maritime commerce into popular science content; The Mathematical Exploration Exhibition Hall gathers a large number of classic electromechanical interactive exhibitions, demonstrating various scientific phenomena in mechanics, acoustics, optics, and electromagnetics; The Life Decoding Exhibition Hall conducts science popularization around human body science and biodiversity; The Future Vision Exhibition Hall focuses on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital technology, and is equipped with a large number of immersive interactive experience devices; The children's science playground is designed for children aged 3-10, with multiple exploration and play zones, and all exhibit items are implemented with safety protection standards. The dome theater plays astronomical and oceanic themed science popularization films in a loop, providing visitors with an immersive audio-visual experience.
The Quanzhou Science Museum innovatively adopts a 1+6 science popularization model that combines museums and schools. It has established long-term cooperative relationships with dozens of local primary and secondary schools, developed standardized study courses covering the entire school stage, and provided supporting services such as scheduled lectures and maker workshops for school group visits. The museum regularly holds science experiment shows, science and technology innovation competitions, science popularization expert lectures, weekend public welfare workshops, and holds multiple science and technology research camps during winter and summer vacations. As an important hub for science popularization in southern Fujian, the venue radiates to subordinate districts and counties such as Shishi, Jinjiang, Nan'an, and Huian, and a large number of surrounding schools have organized study tours here. Science popularization caravans and mobile exhibitions continue to be transported to various counties and towns, filling the gap in grassroots science popularization resources.
In the early design stage of the new building, full consideration was given to the later operation and maintenance needs, and exhibition maintenance channels were reserved to facilitate the maintenance and replacement of mechanical and electrical equipment. Establish a professional operation and maintenance technical team for the venue, implement daily inspections and quarterly deep maintenance systems, timely replace damaged components such as sensors and motors, and ensure a high level of integrity for large-scale interactive exhibitions. The landing of the new Quanzhou Science Museum fills the gap of large modern science popularization venues in southern Fujian and becomes the core battlefield for science popularization education, research and cultural tourism in southern Fujian.
